What is a dump semi trailer?

Short answer, before the detail

A dump semi trailer (also called a tipper semi trailer) is a tractor-drawn trailer with a hydraulic tipping body. Instead of a rigid rear-dump truck, the load sits on a semi-trailer chassis, so the tractor keeps its full payload capacity and the combination carries far more tonnes per trip at a lower cost per tonne-kilometre. It is the standard choice for long-distance bulk transport of construction materials, ore and coal, and for site work where the load has to be discharged quickly.

Chassis and body

• 500 mm main frame with a 16 mm top plate, 18 mm bottom plate and 8 mm web — a stepped-up beam profile that resists the bending load of a raised, fully loaded body.
• 3 mm steel floor and a 2.3 mm side wall divided into three doors per side, so panels can be replaced individually instead of replacing a whole wall.
• Vertical external ribs welded to the side walls — visible in the photos — carry the lateral pressure of stone and ore that would otherwise bulge a flat panel.
• Bolted-in front bulkhead and ladder/handrail at the headboard for safe inspection and lubrication.
• Full-length side underride guard and red/white conspicuity tape along the chassis rail, as photographed.

Hydraulic lifting system

• Front-mounted multi-stage telescopic cylinders — four Ø125 lifting cylinders plus one Ø140 cylinder — raise the body from the front, so the load discharges through the tailgate at the rear.
• The system covers body lift and lower plus the sideways function, and is controlled from the cab through the tractor's air-source control valve.
• Because the ram is mounted low behind the king pin, the raised centre of gravity stays lower than on a long-stroke rear-hinged tipper — the main reason side-tipping and front-lift designs dominate the bulk market.

Running gear and braking

• ZY axles, 13 t rated per axle, on American-type mechanical suspension with 10-leaf steel springs.
• Dual-pipe air brake system with Kemi brake valves: single-chamber brake chambers on the front axle, double-chamber chambers on the rear axles, and an emergency relay valve system.
• ABS fitted as standard, 24 V electrical system and 7-way socket.
• Jost A300C landing legs and a Jost 90/50 traction pin for stable coupling and safe parking when uncoupled.
